Q: Where physically on the device does the temperature measurement take place?
UM: The DS18B20 does not sense temperature directly through the package. For all package types, the DS18B20 senses temperature primarily through the GND pin. Ensuring a good thermal connection between the GND pin of the device and the heat source you wish to measure will provide the best results.
Q: Is there a way to extend the temperature range of the DS18B20?
UM: No, there is not a way to increase the range it reads. The DS18B20 reads with an accuracy of ±0.5°C from -10°C to +85°C and ±2°C accuracy from -55°C to +125°C.
