Types of Surface Mounting Thermoswitch & Bimetal Motor Thermal Protector
There are several types of surface mounting thermoswitch & bimetal protectors, each suited to different applications and motor types:
Bimetal Thermal Protectors (Površinska montaža): These use a bimetallic strip that bends when heated, triggering the switch to disconnect the power supply. They are commonly used in small motors and appliances.
NTC / PTC Thermistor-Based Protectors: These use temperature-sensitive resistors (NTC / PTC thermistors) to monitor the motor’s temperature. They provide precise temperature sensing and are often used in more sophisticated applications.
Electronic Thermal Protectors: These use electronic circuits to monitor and control the motor’s temperature. They offer advanced features such as adjustable temperature sensor thresholds and remote monitoring capabilities.
Surface Mount thermal protector are indispensable components in the safe and efficient operation of motors. By preventing overheating, they protect motors from damage, extend their operational life, reduce the risk of fire hazards, ensure safe operation, and minimize downtime and maintenance costs. Furthermore, thermal protector switch help in complying with industry safety standards, providing peace of mind to operators and stakeholders. As technology advances, thermal protector switch continue to evolve, offering more precise and reliable protection for motors in a wide range of applications.
With the development of technology, the application range of motor is more and more extensive, especially the use of motor in daily life and production is also more and more important. But the motor burn accident also happens, in real life, the motor burn is mainly caused by the following blocked coil overheating, the load is too large motor overload, lack of phase and other reasons. Installing a bimetal heat protector switch is one of the effective ways to protect the motor. Thermal protector, also called temperature switch, temperature control switch, Bimetal thermostats, itd. It is a kind of temperature switch with bimetal sheet as a temperature sensing element, when the electrical appliance is working normally, the bimetal sheet is in a free state, the contact is in a disconnected state, when the temperature rises to the action temperature value, the bimetal element is heated to produce internal stress and rapid action, open the contact, cut off/connect the circuit, so as to play a thermal protection role. Wait until the ambient temperature drops to thereset temperature of the bimetal protector, the contact will re-close the connected circuit, and the motor will work again.
Choosing The Right Surface Mount Thermoswitch & Protector
How to choose the right thermal protector is very important, otherwise not only cannot play a protective role, but will cause the motor cannot work because of the wrong selection, or even burn.
1. Voltage & Current determination
• Motors have different voltage ranges 380V, 230V, 220V ,110V, DC motors will also have 36V/ 24V /12V, itd., according to different working voltages to choose different rated voltage thermal protectors, in principle, the actual application voltage is less than or equal to the rated voltage of the protector, for example, 380V motor cannot choose rated voltage 220V thermal protector, and rated voltage 220V protector can be used in 110V motor;
• The current of the motor is divided into three kinds of starting current, normal working current and blocked current, the rated current of the thermoswitch & protector should be greater than the maximum value of the three currents, and need to leave a margin. For example, a motor normal working current 1A, starting current 1.5A, blocking current 2A, then the rated current of the selected thermal protector is at least 2A, and it is best to choose the rated current of 3A or 5A to retain the margin. Some motor starting current is greater than the rated current of the thermal protector, but the starting time is shorter, and the normal working current and blocking current are less than the rated current of the protector, in this case, you can also choose this protector. Because the starting current is greater than the rated current, but due to the short time, the thermal effect of the current has not had time to make the Bimetal heat leading to protection of the thermal protector, so as not to cause misaction.
Thermoswitch and Thermal Protectors Set-point Temperature
Thermoswitch and Thermal Protectors Specification Guide Thermoswitch and thermal protectors have a set point temperature that is either fixed or field adjustable. The set point is the rated temperature at which the device undergoes a change in state associated with movement of the electrical contacts. Fixed-point devices are rated at a given temperature while field-adjustable devices have a temperature range over which the set point can be adjusted.
Thermoswitch and Thermal Protectors Hysteresis:
Hysteresis, also referred to as the temperature differential, is a finite temperature range over which switching takes place. It is designed to prevent circuitry from constantly changing between states. A hysteresis of 0.5 C will typically actuate 0.5 degrees past the set-point temperature and not change state again until the temperature drops to 0.5C below the set-point temperature.
Thermoswitch and Thermal Protectors Maximum current:
The maximum current rating is the maximum electrical load in amperes that the contacts of the electrical switch is designed to carry.
Thermoswitch and Thermal Protectors Maximum voltage:
The Thermoswitch maximum voltage rating is the greatest potential difference that the device is designed to hold across open switch contacts without arcing or development of a current. The maximum voltage is specified for alternating-current (AC) and direct-current (DC), with AC exhibiting a greater self-extinguishing tendency of an arc across an air gap and therefore able to hold a greater potential difference.
